Mediators do not solve problems; they provide the parties involved with the means to create their own solutions. When parties are allowed to reach their own resolution, it is far more likely that they will comply with the terms of the agreement.
How much depends on how long. Most mediators recommend that you set aside at least three hours. While cost varies based on the area and the particular mediator, in smaller centers the average cost is about $200 per hour.
It is a reality check when you need it; it is a step back to get a more inclusive perspective that will, hopefully, put the process back on track. The key is the way it is done. The mediator does not tell a person what to do or that their view of reality is completely off base.
